  • Shared definitions and who can see what
  • Rebuild / migrate with parity checks
  • Training and optional ongoing support after cutover

Problems this addresses

Cognos migrations are usually about the finance pack: Framework Manager packages, Report Studio or Cognos Analytics reports, and a burst of files people still receive. The package is the semantic layer. The PDF is only how it arrives.

Power BI does not import a Framework Manager package as a model. The definitions have to be redesigned, the scheduled pack has to be replaced on purpose, and the totals have to be checked against the package and the ledger.

The package is doing the accounting argument

Query subjects and calculations in Framework Manager often encode intercompany, currency, or the close version. If those rules stay in the old package, the Power BI report is a picture of a different number. We read the package for the packs finance still runs.

Burst files are the real interface

Many controllers never open Cognos. They open a file that arrived overnight. Replacing that with an interactive app is a change in how the close works. We ask who still needs a fixed file and who will use a report. Paginated reports cover the file. An app covers the review.

Cubes and reports disagree with each other

A cube and a relational report can both be called the pack. We pick the one finance ties to the ledger and treat the other as a legacy cut, not as a second source of truth.

Authors still expect Query Studio freedom

Self-serve on the package created local versions of revenue. Power BI will do the same if everyone can edit the model. Authors get a path to request a measure. They do not each get a private model on day one.

Hypothetical example. A burst report emails a P&L by department the morning after close. In this hypothetical, the department rollup lives only in the Framework Manager package, not in the ledger's cost center list. The Power BI pack has to use the same rollup or the emailed file and the new report will both look official and disagree. The assessment writes that rollup down before build.

What you leave with

You leave with the scheduled packs and interactive reviews that finance still uses, rebuilt on measures traced to the package rules you kept, plus a parity check for a closed period.

A package and report inventory

Which reports are burst, which are opened interactively, and which package they use. Reports with no recipients and no viewers are out of the first wave.

Definitions lifted from the package

The calculations and rollups that change the pack, written as measures and as a short guide finance can read.

A replacement for the burst

Paginated output where a file is still required, and an app where people can filter. Recipients are named. The old schedule is not copied blindly.

Reconciliation to the package and the ledger

One closed period, with gaps explained. Cutover for that pack waits on the explanation.

Migration journey

Assess, Redesign, Implement, Reconcile, and Adopt.

  1. 1. Assess

Inventory, usage, risk, and success criteria.

  2. 2. Redesign

    Target model, semantics, and governance.

  3. 3. Implement

    Rebuild or migrate workloads deliberately.

  4. 4. Reconcile

    Parity checks and cutover confidence.

  5. 5. Adopt

Training, handover, and optional ongoing support.

What a Free Assessment covers

A Free Assessment starts from the Cognos report finance still receives or still opens. We trace it to the package, list the rules that would change the total, and say whether the first delivery is a paginated pack, an interactive report, or both.

Bring last month's file and the person who signs it. We follow up within 2 business days.

FAQs

Can Framework Manager be imported?

Not as a working Power BI model. The business rules in the package are rewritten into measures and relationships, then checked. An import that only moves table names drops the rollups.

Do you replace every burst?

We replace the ones with current recipients. A burst nobody opens is a candidate to retire, with the owner given a chance to object.

What if the ledger and the package already disagree?

We do not hide that inside the new report. The assessment names the gap. Sometimes the work is to stop using the package rule. Sometimes the ledger needs context the package had. We do not pick silently.

Will Query Studio users get a blank model to edit?

No. They get the published reports and a way to ask for a cut. Editing the model stays with the people who own the definitions.
