What we typically cover

  • Inventory and risk assessment of current reports
  • Shared definitions and who can see what
  • Rebuild / migrate with parity checks
  • Training and optional ongoing support after cutover

Problems this addresses

MicroStrategy's value is usually the semantic layer: attributes, metrics, and security filters. Dossiers and reports are how people see it. A Power BI migration that redraws the dossier and ignores the metric definition will not survive a finance review.

Cubes, prompts, and security filters need a deliberate redesign. They do not become a Power BI model by export.

The metric is the asset

A dossier can be rebuilt in an afternoon and still be wrong if margin or revenue is defined in a metric finance has used for years. We inventory the metrics in the packs people run, and we write the Power BI measure beside the old definition.

Prompts are not slicers

MicroStrategy prompts often constrain the query before it runs. A Power BI slicer on an imported model behaves differently. For close packs, that difference changes runtime and sometimes the total. We decide which prompts are business filters and which were only protecting the cube.

Security filters must be retested

A security filter on an attribute is the access rule. Row-level security has to match it for the finance and regional roles you care about. We test with those roles, not with an administrator login.

Intelligent Cubes hide freshness

A cube can serve a fast dossier on stale data. Power BI should show when the model last refreshed. We do not treat a fast dossier as proof the number is current.

Hypothetical example. A margin dossier uses a metric that excludes intercompany, and a regional prompt limits the query. In this hypothetical, a copied visual includes intercompany as soon as the prompt is dropped. The assessment writes the exclusion into the measure and tests the regional role before the dossier is rebuilt.

What you leave with

You leave with priority dossiers and reports rebuilt on measures that trace to the MicroStrategy metrics you decided to keep, plus a security test and a parity check.

A metric map for the packs in scope

The finance and revenue metrics, the attribute grain, and the decision to keep, change, or drop each one. Unused metrics are not migrated by default.

Reports rebuilt on that map

The dossiers and scheduled reports the close and the revenue review still run. Layout follows the decision, not a control-by-control copy.

Security filters translated and tested

Two roles walked through the new model, with a note on any access that got wider or narrower.

A reconciliation pack

Old metric, new measure, source total, and a written reason for any gap, for one closed period.

Migration journey

Assess, Redesign, Implement, Reconcile, and Adopt.

  1. 1. Assess

Inventory, usage, risk, and success criteria.

  2. 2. Redesign

    Target model, semantics, and governance.

  3. 3. Implement

    Rebuild or migrate workloads deliberately.

  4. 4. Reconcile

    Parity checks and cutover confidence.

  5. 5. Adopt

Training, handover, and optional ongoing support.

What a Free Assessment covers

A Free Assessment identifies the dossiers and reports finance still schedules, the metrics that move the total, and the security filters on those metrics. We say what the first wave is and which prompts are real business rules.

Bring the dossier from the close and the person who owns the metric. We follow up within 2 business days.

FAQs

Do you migrate the entire project?

No. MicroStrategy projects accumulate metrics that no current pack uses. We migrate the definitions the meetings depend on and record the rest.

Can prompts be preserved exactly?

The business constraint can be preserved. The prompt interface will not look the same. Where a prompt only existed to keep a cube small, we say so and choose a refresh pattern instead.

What about scheduled PDF bursts?

If finance still needs a fixed file per recipient, paginated Power BI reports and subscriptions are the usual replacement. We confirm who must receive a file and who can use an app.

Will cubes be copied as-is?

No. A cube is rebuilt as a semantic model only for the grain you still need. Copying every cube preserves stale extracts and conflicting metrics.
