What we typically cover

  • Tableau inventory and usage prioritization
  • Semantic redesign for Power BI models
  • Rebuild of priority dashboards with reconciliation
  • Adoption support for analysts and consumers

Problems this addresses

Tableau workbooks often carry the business rules in calculated fields and level-of-detail expressions, not in a shared model. A Power BI migration that redraws the dashboard and leaves those rules behind will not match the meeting Tableau users remember.

Extracts, published data sources, and Server or Cloud permissions also do not become workspaces and row-level security by export. Finance and revenue need the meaning redesigned, then reconciled.

A number ignores a filter on purpose

Tableau can compute a customer count that stays put when someone filters product. Power BI will not keep that behavior unless the rule is written into the model. If we only copy the chart, the filter changes the total and the room thinks the data moved.

Published data sources hide more than one definition

Several workbooks can point at one published source, or each workbook can embed its own. We inventory which source the close pack and the pipeline review actually use before rebuilding extracts as a semantic model.

Permissions were the workbook, not a role

A site role and a workbook filter are not the same as row-level security. A region lead who could open one workbook may see a different cut in an app. We map who sees which accounts and test it.

Stories and dashboards get treated as the same object

A Tableau story is a guided sequence. Power BI apps and reports are a different shape. We keep the decision the story was guiding, and we do not promise a pixel copy of the click path.

Hypothetical example. A revenue workbook shows win rate at the rep grain and a company total that does not change when a product filter is applied. In this hypothetical, that total is a level-of-detail calculation. The Power BI model needs the same rule as a measure, or the filtered page will show a smaller company. The assessment flags that measure before any visual is rebuilt.

What you leave with

You leave with the priority workbooks redesigned on a Power BI model, a written map of the calculations that changed shape, and a reconciliation against Tableau and the source system.

A workbook inventory by meeting

Close, forecast, and pipeline first. Workbooks with no recent viewers are listed as retire or later, with a named person who can object.

Calculations rewritten as measures

The business rule, the Tableau expression it came from, and the measure that replaces it. Differences are called out, especially where grain or filters change the total.

Extracts replaced with a refresh you can see

The semantic model refreshes on a schedule, or it reads live where that is the right trade. The old extract time is not assumed to be correct.

Adoption for authors and consumers

How filters behave now, where to find the official app, and how to ask for a calculation instead of downloading a crosstab.

Migration journey

Assess, Redesign, Implement, Reconcile, and Adopt.

  1. 1. Assess

Inventory, usage, risk, and success criteria.

  2. 2. Redesign

    Target model, semantics, and governance.

  3. 3. Implement

    Rebuild or migrate workloads deliberately.

  4. 4. Reconcile

    Parity checks and cutover confidence.

  5. 5. Adopt

Training, handover, and optional ongoing support.

What a Free Assessment covers

A Free Assessment reviews the Tableau workbooks finance and revenue still open, the published sources behind them, and the calculations most likely to change the total. We name the first wave and the traps, including level-of-detail logic and permissions.

Bring the workbook from the meeting that argues, not a site-wide archive. We follow up within 2 business days.

FAQs

Can you convert a workbook automatically?

Automatic conversion does not preserve meaning. We rebuild the priority reports on a model and check totals. A file converter is not the migration.

What happens to Tableau Server schedules?

Subscriptions and extract refreshes become a Power BI refresh and a distribution list you choose, such as an app or a paginated subscription. We do not assume the old schedule was right. We ask which morning the number has to be ready.

Will filters feel the same?

Power BI filter context is different from Tableau. We reproduce the business rule. We do not promise that every click path feels identical.

Do you need our Tableau administrators the whole time?

We need them for access, usage, and the definitions they already maintain. Day to day build work does not require them in every working session.
